What is a 'Gap' year?

Traditionally a ‘Gap year’ has referred to the gap taken between the completion of high school or college or the gap between graduating college and commencing a career.

A Gap year with Letz Live offers you the opportunity to work in a foreign country. With Letz Live you live and work as residential staff in a wide cross section of the world’s boarding school establishments. In addition to a weekly allowance, you will receive free accommodation including utilities (heating, water and electricity), and meals. Furthermore, in many cases Gap assistants who embrace the challenges and responsibilities of their year abroad are rewarded with duties that may involve travel to national or even international destinations.

A Gap year allows you to mature as a person, gain independence and confidence through caring for students in the boarding school and experiencing international travel. Although a Gap year is a fantastic opportunity to travel, you are expected, and will be routinely reminded that you have been employed to work by the school.

The type and amount of work undertaken will vary from school to school as there is no set formula for the type of tasks expected of a Gap assistant. The needs and requirements of schools vary quite considerably. Accordingly, a Gap assistant needs to be flexible and understanding in such circumstances. Letz Live works in conjunction with boarding schools in Australia, China, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand, to place Gap assistants who have the attributes that the school requires.

Some schools may require their Gap assistant to be competent in a particular discipline whether it is in sports, the performing arts, or in the classroom. You may also be involved in duties assisting the schools staff through individual tutoring, escorting students to medical appointments, or school reception duties. Whatever the situation - you should view your role as a great opportunity for you to try your hand at various challenges.
