GAP YEAR GUIDE: MELBOURNE
We can tell you right now you’ll never be bored in the city that has it all. Known as the ‘hipster’ capital of Australia, this buzzing city will promise to keep you busy. Lose yourself in the endless alleyways or eat yourself silly in the five hundred billion epic cafes and restaurants or maybe shop till you drop or just until your gap budget won’t allow you to anymore (we know all about the budgets). Regardless, your heart will be crushing for more.
WHERE TO EAT:
You’ll be stuck for choice when it comes to meal time, so be sure to arrive with an empty stomach because foods about to consume your life and your body.
SIR CHARLES, FITROY.
Ever had a deep friend egg? Well, you probably should and you should probably get it from Sir Charles located in the ever so interesting streets of Fitzroy. Don’t go past the eggs benedict and definitely leave room for a treat from a selection like you’ve never seen before. Yep, I’m talking brownie stuffed donuts topped with Kit Kats on top. I know, insane! Their Instagram might help pursue you a little more.
Search no more when looking for that big bowl of pasta to satisfy your tastebuds. Pellegrini’s is as traditional as it gets when it comes to Italian even the fit out has classic black and white checkered floors, red vinyl stools and dine at the bar seating.
Although, you can eat here, we suggest going more so for the view/rooftop cinema. Make the mission to the 7th floor and up the stairs to an incredible city spot, Cookie is a must do when in Melbourne town, the rooftop cinema/bar over looking the city provides the best spot for a beverage after a busy day wondering on your feet. Best to be there on a sunny day and preferably for sun down!
Inspired from the streets of Thailand this asian infused food is bound to send your tastebuds up the wall. Down the narrow street of Flinders Lane you’ll find this ever so enticing place. It’s also probably the most Insta worthy restaurant I visited, oh and the most delicious! The line up is usually out the door, so be sure to get in early or if you were too busy at the rooftop beforehand then you can head down to their Go Go bar whilst you wait!
GO & SEE:
It’s hard to pin point the must see’s in Melbourne when everything is worth seeing so pack a bag for the day, get around on your feet and look down every corner as sometimes you’ll find the best things there!
You may get lost trying to find this hidden alley way but it’s definitely worth the search. Even if graffiti isn’t the biggest of your interests we promise it’ll still amaze you. If you’re lucky you’ll catch an artist working on something in the lane and there’s constantly new artwork to be seen. Probably to most photographed spot in Melbourne’s CBD and probably one of the tourists favourite city spots to see!
THE STATE LIBRARY OF VICTORIA.
I know i know, library doesn’t really sound all that exciting but, there’s much more to it. The State Library has several exhibitions on at all times including one with the fascinating history of Melbourne. Plus, it’s frickin’ beautiful.
ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS.
If you’re lucky and the suns out in Melbourne town, take full advantage and head off into the gardens for the day, it’s huge! There’s all types of gardens and grounds areas that make for the perfect picnic spot.
DAY TRIP TO MT MARTHA.
Fancy a road trip? Paradise is only one hour away! Hire a car, hit the road and in approximately 50 minutes you’ll reach the beautiful Mt Martha. It’s not what it probably sounds like – Mt meaning mountains, hiking and all that jazz, it’s actually a tiny beach town with some of the most incredible coastline views you’ll see and so surprisingly close to Melbourne city, it’s definitely a hidden gem. If it’s warm enough go for a swim and if you’re daring enough jump off the cliffs into the crystal clear ocean.
